This video is of one my best friends Gerardo. He is lives in Chicago with his boyfriend and I wanted to know how they felt about when Illinois became the 15th state to allow same sex marriage! It was so important to me that Gerardo get the same opportunity to marry the man he loves just as I can, and this is just one step closer.

Baker Would Rather Go to Jail Than Bake Gay Wedding Cake

Are people REALLY this ignorant? I guess so. I found this disturbing and ignorant story about a Colorado baker who refused to make a cake for a gay couple, he would "rather go to jail"According to the guy, Jack Phillips, he doesn't believe it is what God would want him to do and that he would be going against his beliefs and what he was meant to do...because baking cakes is what some people on this earth are meant to do I suppose? Anyways, I found this story not only ignorant and any other negative adjective one could think of, but a waste of what some would deem "newsworthy". Not to say that marriage equality is never news worthy (that is never the case), but that any news outlet would give THIS fool an ounce of attention to stand on. I hope he looses business if anything! Can you tell I am annoyed? I dont want his cakes anyway...pie is more my thing.

Perezhilton Gay Dad Docu Series

Perezhilton just announced today that he indeed will be teaming up with Bunim/Murray for a docu series following Gay dads and their journey's of raising their kids.It has yet to be taken to networks and is still being casted, however this is so exciting! Especially since the Gay blogger himself more recently just became a father to a baby boy via invetro back in February!

F Hate!

So here is a page that I "like" on Facebook, its called FCKH8.com ! Its all about equality for the LGBT community and they post/share really inspiring and cool ways people show their support for equality within the LGBT and Gay community. They also have fun t-shirts, bracelets, and more that you can find and order on their website, to show support. Fuck Hate! 

So with that being shared, next time you are logged into your FB account go "like" their page and show some support! 

Raising Awareness

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance to memorialize those who were killed due to transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor and remember Rita Hester who was a victim to an anti-transgender murder back in November 28th 1998. It is so important to raise public awareness of these hate crimes against transgendered people and to honor the lives of those who were victims of anti-transgendered murders. It is time to step forward and to remember that we must treat all equally.

Same Sex Marriage Victory!

So most recently, November 6th to be exact, Illinois has become the 15th state to approve same sex marriage. The bill passed the house 61-54 leaving those in Boystown to celebrate and share champagne toasts with Chicago Mayer Rahm Emanual. Boystown Celebrates!

Student Rejected from Frat Based off of Sexual Orientation

Brian Stewart from Morgan State University located in Baltimore, MD was recently rejected from Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity because he is gay. Brian is a White House intern and was excited to pledge for this particular frat because according to the Huffington Post article, his childhood pastor and mentor had been a part of that frat as well. This angers me! Simply just because of sexual orientation this intelligent young man was rejected based off of his sexual preference. According to the article , Kappa Alpha Psi does not mention any discrimination on its website nor does Morgan State University as well.   I believe this is just an example of possibly the male students who were a part of this frat not personally being accepting of Brian Stewart's orientation.

Here is a video clip of music artist Macklemore discussing his hit song "Same Love" and what inspired the topic for the song. It is important for the media to be exposed to marriage equality, especially our youth. "Same Love" is a great example of this. I found Macklemore's views and inspirations for the song to be inspiring and genuine.

Mid Term Rushkoff

Review of Rushkoff

            When it comes to Rushkoff and his readings, I did agree with most of his points of view and his evaluation of media. I feel that he made some evident and clear points especially with the power and benefit of digital technology. As Rushkoff states, “The processes we used to use for finding a doctor or a friend, mapping a route, or choosing a restaurant are being replaced by machines that may, in fact, do it better. What we lose in the bargain, however, is not just the ability to remember certain facts, but to call upon certain skills” (Rushkoff, 33).  This is certainly a viewpoint that I find myself agreeing with and not only that but one I think my generation struggles with in terms of communication and relations with others. It is points like these that Rushkoff is great at proving points and opening up topics of discussion by allowing readers to divulge into deeper conversation and upon the root of a modern day issue. The documentary we watched in class touched a lot on the subject of how media has overtaken people and their daily lives, and even so, with children growing up in this generation. Video games, social networking and being glued to our cell phones has taken away from the daily activities of interacting with others on a personal level, face-to-face, and also has disengaged children from such things as outdoor activities and healthy habits. Rushkoff says, "We can choose to whom or what we want to be available, and when. And we can even choose people for whom we want to be always on. Being open to a call from a family member 24/7 doesnt require being open to everyone" (31). 

      Rushkoff touches on how we have learned new technologies, but not yet learned how exactly they work and how they work on us humans. "This means they have access to the capabilites given to them by others, but not the power to determine the value-creating capabilites of these technologies for themselves" (Rushkoff, 13). By not knowing how these technologies work, Rushkoff believes that we then are atually being a step behind the capability that is given to us. Rushkoff delves into deeper meaning behind what it means to have technology and the affect that it has on us but also why it is important to understand how its programming works on us as well. Relationships and the convience of talking to others via online and the relationships we develop from using technology. "A mediaspace that used to make us feel utterly alone now connects us to anyone, anywhere" (Rushkoff, 41). However, just like in the documentary we watched, it is important that we do not spend too much time on the computer with our relationships, but rather in person on a more personal level because ultimately there is no comparison to human connection that is face-to-face. There is a different interaction because it is real and human. Overall, Rushkoff talked about topics with technology that I agreed upon a majority of the time and really opened up my mind into thinking thru a different lense with a different perspective. 

LGBT Group Created for Middle Schoolers on North Shore

This article hit even more home for me because I grew up in the north suburbs and this article talks about a nonprofit group that was started in Northfield, IL for middle schoolers who are a part of the LGBT community.

This not only is beneficial to teens who have difficulty coming out but also acts as a community for them to feel safe and comfortable with their sexual orientation, something I find to be a great and useful out reach for teens.

Lucky #14

Recently read an article that made me hopeful and had good news regarding marriage equality for Illinois Veterans, trying to make Illinois the 14th state  legalize gay marriage.

This is so valuable to me because these men and women have served our country,  I feel they too deserve to be united in marriage with their loved ones because equality is a beautiful thing. Clayton Peterson voiced his opinion in this article, expressing:

"It is overwhelming to me that despite my years of service for our country, I am not afforded the same marital rights as straight couples," said Clayton Peterson, a U.S. Army and Vietnam War Veteran. "I fought for this country to uphold our freedoms and to allow all Americans to live and love who they wish. It is sad that these freedoms do not apply to my spouse and I in our home state of Illinois."
